1. Stop for urgent conditions
Stop the zone and seek qualified help for electrical hazards, flooding, damaged pressure equipment, dry-running indications or a pump alarm/lost-prime condition.
2. Define scope
Identify whether one head, one zone, several zones or all zones are affected. This first distinction prevents a local obstruction from being treated as a source failure.
3. Observe changes
Note new nozzles, recent work, filter service, valve changes, weather, schedule changes, pump cycling and when the symptom began.
4. Inspect accessible evidence
Look for broken heads, blocked nozzles, failure to pop up, leaks and soggy areas. Do not excavate without utility location or dismantle pressurized parts.
5. Check demand
Total current nozzle flow and compare it with measured usable flow. Larger nozzles can produce short reach and weak far heads even when static pressure appears normal.
6. Compare dynamic conditions
Measure static and dynamic pressure at comparable locations. Compare near/far and low/high heads for restriction or elevation evidence.
7. Check valve and filter safely
A restricted filter or partially opening zone valve affects one zone differently from a source-wide shortage. Follow the equipment instructions before any service.
8. Escalate correctly
Pumped systems with collapse across all zones, alarms or lost prime need qualified pump and electrical service. Do not bypass backflow protection or alter controls.
9. Document the next test
The result should be a cause group, a next measurement and an escalation threshold—not a remote diagnosis.
Worked example
If far heads are weak, near heads are normal and a soggy patch is visible, an active lateral leak is a high-priority cause group. Stop the zone if safe and repair the leak before pressure changes.
