What each technology primarily does

Sediment filters retain particles; activated carbon adsorbs selected compounds and can reduce chlorine, taste or odor under verified conditions; softeners exchange hardness ions; RO separates water through a membrane; UV inactivates susceptible microorganisms under validated dose and water-quality conditions.

What they do not prove

A sediment filter does not remove dissolved salts. Carbon is not a universal pathogen or chemical barrier. A softener does not remove viruses or bacteria. RO claims vary by system and contaminant. UV does not remove dissolved chemicals and leaves no distribution residual.

Pressure and peak flow

Every housing, bed and membrane adds pressure loss. Confirm certified or manufacturer service flow at peak demand and include dirty-filter or end-of-run conditions in the pump and pressure review.

Waste and consumables

Cartridges create replacement waste; carbon and media require replacement or backwash; softeners use salt and regeneration water; RO creates reject water; UV uses electricity and lamps and usually needs pretreatment.

Order and pretreatment

Remove damaging sediment before fine filters and membranes. Manage iron, manganese, hardness, oxidants or turbidity according to the membrane, carbon, softener or UV requirements. Do not place stages by marketing convention alone.

Certification and claims

Check the official certification listing for the exact model and contaminant-reduction claim. Certification to one standard or claim does not mean the product treats every possible contaminant.

Maintenance and monitoring

Record pressure drop, flow, breakthrough indicators, salt, reject, lamp status and replacement intervals. Verify treatment with appropriate follow-up testing rather than relying only on elapsed time.

Scenario: hardness only

Confirmed hardness with adequate peak flow may support a softener review. Adding RO and UV without a demonstrated objective adds waste, energy and maintenance.

Scenario: high TDS and drinking use

RO may be a candidate only after identifying the dissolved constituents, recovery, reject disposal, storage and certified claim. Carbon or softening alone does not demonstrate TDS reduction.

Scenario: positive microbiology

Use the alternate-safe-source and public-health response first. Source correction, pretreatment and validated disinfection require local guidance; do not purchase one device based only on this comparison.

Worked example

A private well has confirmed hardness and fine sediment but no microbiological problem. A practical sequence may be sediment control before a correctly sized softener, with pressure-drop monitoring. Carbon, RO and UV remain unnecessary unless testing or the intended use establishes another objective.

Safety boundary. Stop and obtain qualified help for electrical hazards, active flooding, unsafe pressure, sealed pressure vessels, contamination risks, chemical handling or regulated work. Water-treatment and greywater guidance does not certify drinking-water safety.
